Easy to Clean

Even in the cleanest environments, there is always the possibility of something spilling and contaminating the surface. Cleaning can be extremely time consuming and aggressive chemicals may be needed for harsh stains and graffiti. But if the right sealer or coating is used, it will make cleaning easier and make contaminants like mold, mildew and dirt easier to remove.

Stain Resistant Sealers

Due to their strong bonds and high density, stain resistant sealers are often used to shield off liquids. Petroleum-based liquids like oil and grease are far less dense than water and are known to easily penetrate surfaces. Stain resistant sealers can prevent stains caused by liquids creating a nice dense, fluid-proof shield. Because they are also usually water repellents they make mold and mildew easier to remove.

Stain Resistant Coatings

For the toughest chemical spills a durable coating system is extremely effective. Concrete coatings act as a protective barrier to take all the abuse. Spills can sit on the surface for extended amounts of time before needing to be cleaned. Once it is time to clean, spills are easily removed and wiped away. The concrete and the concrete coating remain undamaged and in tact. Because of the smooth finish, they can also improve the appearance of the floor and make it easier to clean.

Cleaning Concrete

In order for the concrete sealer to either bond to optimal strength, or penetrate to optimal depth, you need to make sure the surface of the concrete is clean and ready for application. This can be achieved by pressure washing, acid-etching or mechanical scarification.

Pressure Washing

It is important that you properly clean the concrete surface you are working with. The easiest way to clean an exterior slab is by power washing also known as pressure washing. Power washing is a lot easier than acid etching, which may also be necessary depending on the situation of your concrete, and it will ensure that your concrete surface is cleared of debris, dirt, and dust that can get in the way of the concrete sealers proper function.

Acid Etching

In order to properly prepare a substrate to accept a concrete sealer one of the best surface preparation methods is to acid etch the concrete. Acid etching will open up the pores of the concrete and allows the new concrete sealer to properly adhere. Acid etching is much less labor intensive than grinding the concrete but proper safety precautions should be taken.

Choosing a Treatment

Countertops

With a Ghostshield stain resistant sealer, like the Countertop 880, there is no need for aggressive cleaners. Fluorocarbons used in these formulas can prevent stains caused by oil-based liquids and make spills easy to clean and wipe away. Another feature is enhanced lubricity – when solids and liquids tend to slide off, helping to prevent build-up and extend the time between cleanings. Keep in mind that easy to clean does not mean the surface is self-cleaning, so some elbow grease will be needed to complete the task.

Ghostshield concrete coatings like the Polyaspartic 745 does as its name suggests and coats the concrete to completely stop the penetration of fluids. Extremely resilient and resistant to chemicals, acids, and abrasions, spills can be left on the surface for extended amounts of time before needing to be cleaned up.

Cleaners

If cleaning is necessary and it comes time to remove stains or you are looking to prepare a surface to accept a concrete coating, Ghostshield offers degreasers, acid-etchers and acid-free etchers.

Eliminating the need to use harsh chemicals the Micro-Degreaser 1100 safely cleans and degreases. This powerful, 100% biodegradable concrete cleaner and degreaser has absolutely no acids, solvents, or VOC's. Specially formulated to lift dirt, oil, sludge, and grime. The 1100 will also encapsulate and lift petroleum-based oil, vegetable and animal fats along the way.

Less caustic than traditional muriatic acid, but just as powerful, the Hydro-Etch 1000 cleans and creates an effective surface profile by opening the substrates pores. Specially formulated to clean, brighten and etch concrete while removing efflorescence, dirt, algae and scum.

Eliminating the need to use muriatic acid to etch concrete, the Eco-Etch 1001 safely cleans and creates an effective surface profile by opening the substrates pores. This powerful, 100% biodegradable concrete cleaner and etcher has absolutely no acids, solvents, or VOC's. Specially formulated to clean, brighten and etch concrete without any harmful effects.
